The baby boy was the son of the accused woman’s best friend.

The Provincial Court in Almería has sent Mercedes R.A. to eight years in prison after she was found guilty of killing a 14 month old baby in an illegal nursery which she ran in her flat in El Ejido.

The death occurred on December 3 1996 when the child, the son of her best friend ‘suffered a blow of such intensity’ that it ended his life. The guilty woman was earlier told to pay compensation of 120,000€ to the child’s mother.

The sentence was reduced because of the time it has taken for the case to reach court.
