Fly me to the Moon

The best way to travel to Costa Tropical is by flying down. There are basically three important airports in Andalucia (Malaga & Almeria) but one of the most important is Granada Airport. Granada airport is a thorough-way for tourists who want to visit the coastal areas and the beaches as well as he stunning Alpujarras and Contraviesa. Granada Airport in Spain is situated in the Vega del Genil area, which can be translated to the plains of the River Genil and is a 10 minute drive from Granada city centre.

    The airport is situated at a distance of around 16km west from the city of Granada. The different cities in Andalucia that can be reached from the Granada airport are:

    Jaen: 106km
    Malaga: 129km
    Almeria: 166km
    Sevilla: 256km
    Cordoba: 166km
    Huelva: 350km

    From the Granada city center, you can reach the following places:

    · The Sierra Nevada Ski resort: 45 minutes drive from the Granada Airport

    · Beaches of Salobrena: 50 minutes drive

    · Trevelez in Alpujarras Mountains: 1 hour and 45 minute drive

    The Granada Airport connects the rest of Spain and other parts of the world to the Costa Tropical region. There are very few international flights that will fly you down to the Granada Airport. Most of the international airlines plying to this airport in Andalucia are cheap flights. The airport handles mostly local flights from Barcelona and Madrid.

    History

    The terminal building of the Granada airport was inaugurated in 1972. As of today, the airport consists of a single runway, which is 2,900 m long and the width is 45 meters. It has been names as 09 – 27. This Costa Tropical airport has enough space for 25 aircrafts and only 11 of them are for commercial airplanes. The Granada airport saw a record number of 777,000 passengers transiting through its terminals in 2006.

    The first ever flight recorded to have taken off from the Granada Airport was to Santa Fe in 1911. In the year 1922, the town hall in Granada donated some land area to enable the construction of a permanent airport facility. This facility was inaugurated in 1925 and was named Aeródromo Dávila commemorating Luis Dávila Ponce de León. The first service from the Aeródromo Dávila flew to Seville.

    Transportation

    The Granada Airport can be accessed from the south using the A92 Seville motorway. As a tourist, you will find different types of transport options to the Granada city center from the airport including buses that run daily. There is a bus leaving for the city center after the arrival of each plane at this Costa Tropical airport. The standard fare is 3 Euro and the time taken to reach the city center will be 45 minutes.

    You can also take taxis for 17 EUR to the city center and 25 EUR to the Alhambra. If you are heading straight to the ski resort of Sierra Nevada then your fare will be 63 EUR. There is also the option of hiring cars.
