Granada Rare Treats

The beautiful city of Granada in Andalulcia has a host of tourist attractions which include the stunning Alhambra Palace and the Capilla Real (Royal Chapel) and the adjoining Cathedral There are many other historical buildings and magnificent gardens ,all of which attract many visitors each year, however hidden away in the streets of the city are some wonderful museums that are quite often missed by visitors to the city.

  • Lesser Known Granada Museums

    Firstly there is the Museo Manuel de Falla {Manuel de Falla Museum} , which is dedicated to Granada’s most famous 20th century composer, Manuel de Falla. Here you can see his piano where he created his masterpieces along with items from his everyday life. The tour of his home- which remains exactly as it was while he lived there gives visitors a wonderful insight into his life. The building also plays host to concerts of his work on certain weekend evenings

    The museum is located at Paseo de los Mártires, s/n . It costs just € 3.00 for adults, € 1.00 For children and the over 65, and € 1.00 for students and groups
    It is open Tuesday – Sunday 10am – 2pm with the last admissions at 1.30pm
    During July and August the museum is open Thursday,Friday,Saturday and Sunday
    There are guided tours for groups on Wednesday,Thursday,and Friday

    Another excellent museum is the Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares {Museum of Popular Arts and Customs} also know as the Museo Casa de los Tiros which is located in the 16th century Renaissance building Casa de los Tiros on Calle Pavaneras, 19
    The museum was founded in 1921 and is now home to a wide mixture of exhibits from stunning Baroque sculptures , paintings from the 17th, 18th and 19th century as well as engravings, furniture, and fabrics from throughout Granada’s history. There is also a wonderful photograph collection, featuring photos of the city and its monuments throughout the ages, and the newspaper archives which span centuries

    The museum is open Tuesdays, 2.30-8.30pm. Wednesday to Saturday, 9am-8.30pm. Sundays and public holidays, 9am-2.30pm. Closed Mondays, 1 and 6 January, Good Friday, 1 May, 1 November, and 6, 24, 25 and 31 December.

    Another museum which is housed in the residence used by of one of Granada’s famous sons as a summer home for 10 years from 1926 and 1936 is the Casa Museo de Federico García Lorca (House-Museum of Federico García Lorca)
    Federico García Lorca was a famous writer, poet and playwright who was killed in 1936 by National forces during the first year of the Civil War. One of his most famous works La Casa de Bernarda Alba (The House of Bernarda Alba), was written in the residence. If Spanish literature is one of your interests then this museum is not to be missed. In the museum you will be able to see his personal effects, drawings, paintings, manuscripts and much more.

    Open Tuesday through Sunday. Closed Mondays.
    July and August from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
    The rest of the year Mornings from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    Afternoons from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (from October through March) and from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (in April, May, June and September)

    The Museo de la Abadía del Sacromonte (Sacromonte Abbey Museum) is located Camino del Sacromonte on at the top of the Sacromonte hill and is where you can see a wonderful collection of artwork, books, and ancient copper plates including one plate that depicts the oldest map of Granada. There is another reason for visiting this museum, you get one of the best views of the city and the beautiful Alhambra Palace.
    Entry to the museum costs € 4.00 It is open Tuesday to saturday 11:00-13:00 & 16:00-18:00 hours // sunday 16:00-18:00 hours.

    Also nearby is the Centro Interpretación del Sacromonte or the Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte {Cave Museum} located on Calle Barranco de los Negros. Here you can see several caves with exhibitions of traditional crafts such as basketry, blacksmithing, weaving, cookery, etc. There are often art exhibitions here as well. There is a bus service which will take you up the hill.There are two options , the Number 34 bus goes all the way but is a limited service. It is best to get the number 31 bus from
    Plaza Nueva and get of at Peso de la Harina in the Cuesta Chapiz and then walk along the Camino de Sacromonte
    During the summer it is also possible to see Flamenco performances and there is also an open air cinema which is open during July and August.
    It is open 10:00 – 14:00 and 16:00 – 19:00 (Tuesday – Sunday} and costs € 5.00

    This is just a selection of the fine museums that this historical city has to offer. There is plenty to see and will entertain the whole family.
