  • Andalucian Horses

Today there are different breeds of horses and they are used for different purposes like in horse racing, breeding, playing polo, horse riding etc. One of the best horses of the world comes from Andalucia in Spain. In fact, the Andalusian horse is one of the oldest known breeds in the world and is also known as the PRE (Pura Raza Española ) translated as Purebred Spanish Horse. The Andalucian horses are bred all over Costa Tropical and are considered to be a sub-breed of the great Iberian horses. It is also similar to the Lusitano breed of horses.

Andalucian horses have been extensively used as riding horses, and have been the preferred mount for many kings over the last few centuries. They are preferred as these horses are extremely intelligent animals and they tend to learn very quickly. There are some part-bred Andalucian horses, which are very popular with jockeys and are often used in horse racing and other sporting activities. These magnificent horses from Costa Tropical are even used for show jumping as well as other equestrian events.

How to identify an Andalucian Horse

Horses from Andalucia have some fine qualities like high head carriage, elegance, short arched neck, broad forehead, powerful quarters, silky flowing mane, and wonderful proportions. The manes of most of the Andalucian mares are normally clipped in Spain. It is only the beatuful and bold stallions who can display their manes, which brings out the full splendor. The Andalucian horses are available in four colors of which 50% white or grey while the rest of them are black or bay.

A Brief History of Andalucian Horses

According to archaeological evidence discovered in the Iberian Peninsula, it is believed that the oldest horse in Costa Tropical is the Iberian Horse, which dates back to almost 25,000 B.C. This horse existed in a primitive form and was known as the Sorraia. Archeologists believe this to be true as they have been shown in various cave paintings found all across the Iberian Peninsula and these paintings date back to almost 20,000 BC.

The history of the Andalucian horses goes well before the birth of Christ and at a time when the Romans had conquered Spain. This was the time when the Romans came across this breed of horse and were all praise for its qualities. This horse was later cross-bred with Arab horses by the Moorish conquerors. Once the Moors left Spain, these horses from the Costa Tropical region became extremely popular and were taken by many Spanish conquistadors to America.

The Andalucian beauty even laid the foundation for the royal horse of Denmark called the Frederiksborg as well as the Neapolitan horseand many other breeds.
