Almunecar: The tropical coast of Granada

There is only one place in Andalucía where the crystal-clear and calm blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea can lure even the strongest at heart and that place is Almunecar. This beautiful Costa Tropical coastal town is famous for some of the most picturesque spots in Spain and hence, has been aptly named as the "Tropical Coast of Granada". It is the place where the mighty mountains meet the depth of the sea and where you will find some of the high quality custard apples, avocados, papayas, mangoes, guavas, and bananas. This is not just another coastal Andalucian town it is a Mediterranean paradise.

    Situated at 36° 43′ 0N Latitude/3° 40′ 60W Longitude

    Land Area: 83.40sqkm

    Population: 26,264 (2007 census)

    Airport: Granada Airport and Malaga International Airport

    Most people prefer to fly down to the Granada airport and then take a taxi or bus from Granada although the distance from Granada or Malaga is almost the same. Malaga airport is 90km and is connected to the Malaga town center with regular buses and taxis. You can find buses to Almunecar from the central bus station in Malaga. The last bus leaves at 1930hrs. Granada airport is 80km and you can take a bus from the Granada bus station for Almunera with the last bus leaving at 2000hrs.

    Other Travel options

    You can also use bus service from different parts of Spain to reach Almunecar. Buses depart from Barcelona, Cordoba, Granada, La Herradura, Madrid, Malaga, Motril, Salobrena, Sevilla among other places. The summer and winter schedules for the bus services may be different and hence tourists should confirm the timings before arriving in Andalucia. The nearest train stations are also Granada and Malaga. You can reach by boat too but the nearest ports would be Malaga and Almeria (130km).

    Places to See

    Almunecar has some of the best hotspots in the Costa Tropical region like the Roman Aquaduct situated in the Rio Seco valley. The aquaduct is one of the oldest historical landmarks and is just 2km away from Almunecar. There is another Roman aqueduct at Torrecuevas, which is around 4km from Almunecar. This is a town that breathes and lives history and has several historical monuments that has stood the time and belongs to the era of the Phoenicians, Moors, Romans, Visigoth, and Christians.

    Beaches

    There are plenty of beaches here and the most popular is the Puerta del Mar, which is also popular for its social scene and shopping center. The second in the line-up is the Velilla beach, which is around 1,360m long.

    Nightlife

    Nightlife is quite lively and the center of attraction in this Costa Tropical region is the Plaza Kelibia that witness night entertainment throughout the high season. There are several tapas bars that are open until early morning.

    Weather

    The weather is quote pleasant in Almunecar and summer is definitely the favorite tourist season anywhere in Costa Tropical. It has a microclimate that is not exactly tropical and is dominated by plenty of sunshine, sea breezes, and around 20 days of rains. The average winter temperatures hover around 180C while the summer temperature averages 250C.
